Midas: Processing Overview

The MIDAS is an advanced FPGA based graphics processor, used to switch and integrate multiple video sources into composite images, in real-time. The system is a  hardware only solution and provides up to eight dual-link DVI video inputs that can be managed over up to three outputs. The MIDAS can simultaneously process more than 2 Giga-pixels per second making it a world leader in real-time video processing.

  • dual-link DVI,Pixel-perfect

The MIDAS can drive single or multiple monitors in any combination of screen resolutions or aspect ratios. Display configuration couldn't be easier with more than 200 user defined input and output configurations. The output can be displayed in layers, with any inputs stacked and positioned on the output display, with individual crop, cut, offset, colour mapping and transparency.

In multi-layer mode each monitor may have several sources of data overlaying and under laying each other giving the capability to create a high resolution, pixel perfect composite image.

The MIDAS is a pixel-perfect real-time graphics processor, providing a flawless live image without loss of definition or quality. To achieve optimal latency the processing is divided across distributed high-end graphics processors with direct control of the high resolution live video sources.

In addition, the MIDAS can accept data from any source (Windows, Linux, Unix, Solaris), each kept fully synchronized and seemlessly blended.

  • MIDAS II is used on the mission systems simulator of the Merlin Helicopter.

The process of pixelby- pixel transparent overlay is illustrated (above right) for a small 5 x 5 pixel sample. In this example, four videos are synchronized, cropped and positioned on capture (bottom). Each video source has its position in the output display set (in this case symbols on top and map at the bottom) and its transparency colour set (middle). They are then added in layer order to create the output (top).
